Why the answer is not one food
Weight change happens over time. One roti or one serving of rice cannot decide the result on its own.
A large plate of rice with little protein may leave you hungry sooner. Several rotis covered in ghee can also make a meal much heavier than expected.
When roti may help
Whole-wheat roti can provide fibre and can feel filling when eaten with dal, vegetables, curd or another protein source.
- Keep the size and number sensible.
- Avoid adding ghee automatically.
- Include protein and vegetables with it.
When rice works well
Rice is easy to digest and can absolutely be part of a balanced meal. The main issue is often the serving size, not the rice itself.
- Use a moderate bowl instead of filling most of the plate.
- Pair it with dal, rajma, chana, curd, paneer, eggs or another suitable protein.
- Add vegetables or salad for volume and fibre.
A simple plate rule
Start with vegetables, add a clear protein source, and then choose a sensible portion of rice or roti. Eat slowly and notice when you feel comfortably satisfied.
Choose the option you enjoy and can follow consistently. A sustainable meal is more useful than a strict rule you cannot maintain.
